Watch out for SEO Scammers

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) has become a big industry. Everyone wants to be on the front page of Google. Unfortunately, there is only room for 10 websites there. While, SEO is not difficult, it is presented by many practitioners as a black art.

There are two steps to SEO. Firstly, getting the website content right with the right keywords. The second step is to get good links back to your website. There are other little tricks as well which become more important where the online market place is very savvy, such as the SEO service provider sector. Fortunately, in most sectors if you just do the basics, you will be on the front page as most of your competitors donít have a clue.

Some of the tactics used by some SEO services can also be rather dubious. For example, I regularly get approached by SEO scammers asking for links to their clientís sites, because of the high Google ranking of my sites. What I then find is they offer a reciprocal link to a very lowly ranked page which is  hard to find on their clientís site, many levels below the home page- where not even google can find it. Others will create link farms for their clients on a totally different site, which might help their clients until the link providers find out what has happened. I regard these practices unethical. They are unlikely to win their clients too many friends from the businesses that are supposed to be supporting them.

So how much should you pay to get your website SEOíd? Some people charge thousands of dollars, even when the process is quite simple for most people. One thing you can do yourself is look for complimentary businesses in your network, and just agree to exchange links. You probably have a referral arrangement with these people already.

Google Adwords is another offering for these service providers. They promise to build a campaign for you for $250, which means they will probably spend 1 hour on it. As an experienced user of Adwords, I know you canít set up good campaigns in one hour. You get what you pay for.

The whole process of SEO and Adwords is quite straight forward, although it does involve some time. (There is no such thing as a fre.e lunch.) Which is why I show people how to do it for themselves.

Online marketing is becoming such an important part of business today, it is essential that you have at least some understanding of how it works and the low cost marketing opportunities it creates for your business.

Donít let the scammers take your money and sell you a black box you donít understand. Take control of this very important part of your business.
